Time to Rethink the Definition of “Deck”?
By ProMatcher Staff
When you think “deck” you automatically think of a raised wooden platform attached to the back your home which extends above your yard. While this is a generically accurate definition--decks have evolved into so much more.
For starters, decks aren’t just for the back of your house. Your deck could also be located in the front or on either side of your house. If you enjoy the socialization aspect of your front yard, why put the deck in the back when you can capitalize on sidewalk visitors or the flow of neighborhood traffic? Perhaps you have a large side yard or the terrain in your backyard is not conducive to a deck. There are no rules that say you can’t put your deck on the side of your house. Of course, if your idea of sitting on your deck involves peace and solitude, then you’ll want to locate your deck on the most private side of your house, whether it be the front, back or side.
Also, a deck doesn’t need to be attached to your house at all. The perfect deck design for your home could involve a transition from your house to a deck which involves a sidewalk or patio. This is a perfect layout for a home which doesn’t have a sliding or patio door. Or, maybe you have a beautiful garden behind your home which provides the perfect transition from your home to peace and serenity of a detached deck.
Another misnomer is that a deck is always raised. If the elevation of the area which you want to build a deck is level with your home, your deck can also rest at ground level. Of course you’ll want to elevate the decking, so it isn’t in direct contact with the ground. This may require a small step to get on the deck, but the elevation of the deck is still a far cry from the traditional “raised platform”.
